コメント	A charismatic hero of Latin American Constructivism, Joaquin Torres-Garcia (1874-1949) is revered today as one of Latin America's most influential artists. He was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, and was the founder of the Taller Torres-Garcia, the most significant art educational community of its time, modeled after the Bauhaus. Celebrated as a painter and theoretician, Torres-Garcia is also famed for breaking new ground in sculpture. From the late 1920s onwards, Torres-Garcia elaborated Mondrian and Van Doesburg's Neo-Plasticism into a three-dimensional conception, making grids and planes in wood which he named "maderas." These "maderas" informed his simultaneous experiments in children's toys, which he sold as educational tools for young minds. For this monograph, the great scholar and curator Margit Rowell introduces the many facets of this pioneer figure to a new generation.
