Marion Milton "Black Mac" Magruder, USMC, was a pioneer in Radar Intercept Night Fighting, reconfiguring British technology to include a remote ground control intercept (GCI) radar operator. Magruder's career led to many accomplishments that reinforced his reputation as an intelligent man and able commander. During WWII, his unit was not only the top-scoring Night Fighter Squadron of the Pacific Theater, but also carried the best safety record and highest combat rate, despite the fact that it arrived 40 days after the Okinawa campaign began. Drawing upon primary sources such as Magruder's private files, diaries from his squadron, and official military reports, the book describes Magruder's combat sorties in detail and offers new insight into the evolution of air combat.
