Alan's career as a photographer started after he received a BFA in photography from the Rochester Institute of Technology in New York. He later went on to earn a master's degree in fine arts from the Academy of Art College in San Francisco. After graduation, he stayed on at the Academy as a teacher for the next seventeen years, then decided to leave teaching in order to allow more time for his own work.
